I’ve been bitching about it for months. What’s so freaking great about Google? The press seemed to be so enamored with it. It was a sexy story about a bunch of sexy millionaires. It was typical, and I expected it. Where was the press when Yahoo! announced Q4 earnings that completely knocked the cover off the ball? Where was it when Yahoo! announced Y!Q, the newest contextual search product? In fact, it seemed that whenever Yahoo! had some good news, the stock would drop. After announcing a quadrupling of earnings, The Street smacked us with an (approximately) 80 cent slide.
In the last few of months, Yahoo! has:
- Redesigned Yahoo! Next [which I designed]
- Redesigned Yahoo! Research [which I consulted on]
- Redesigned Y!Q [which is (halfassedly) implemented on this site]
- Acquired Flickr [which I loved]
- Launched Movie Recommendations
- Launched Yahoo! 360º
- Opened their Search APIs
- Launched a Creative Commons Search Product
- Released aFirefox Toolbar
- Quadrupled their mail storage space to 1GB
- Quadrupled The Street’s expectations
- They hired me
I’m sure I missing something. In any case, some attitudes and perceptions may be shifting. Here are some things that tell me that the barometer is moving a bit:
- Replaced Google as the top-rated search engine Search Engine Watch
- The Guardian published Second Sight
- How Yahoo! Got it’s Mojo Back
- Wired published UnGoogle

Gee Lance…you do defend your turf. This is beginning to sound like the Coke vs. Pepsi debate. Google is the darling of the internet right now because the media says so–not because it is true. I remember when Yahoo stock hit $217 per share…and people thought they could do no wrong either. Relax…Google’s time will come.
